Abstract. Motivic measures provide a generalization of classical invariants (such as Euler characteristic) of complex algebraic varieties. In this talk, we will introduce motivic measures and its connections with number theory by exploring relations between motivic measures and zeta functions (for varieties over finite fields), in particular, explain why the zeta function is like an Euler characteristic.
