Abstract. One of the main theorems in 3-dimensional topology is that most (irreducible) 3-manifolds can be described as fibrations over the circle with fiber a surface. This result has motivated the study of algebraic fibrations for groups, i.e., homomorphisms to the group of integers with finitely generated kernels. Some tools that have been relevant in this story include hyperbolic geometry, cubical geometry, and L2-homology. In this talk I will introduce such tools and discuss the problem of finding algebraic fibrations for groups beyond the world of 3-manifolds. This includes the fundamental group of some higher dimensional manifolds with exotic geometric features.
