Abstract. Certain involutions on closed 3-manifolds determine self-dual, bilinear codes. In turn, these codes give the (equivariant) cohomology algebras of the 3-manifolds. Using information about self-dual codes (and similar structures) one can show that 'most' 3-manifolds do not admit any non-trivial involution.
