Course Objectives |
This course is designed to be an introductory seminar for graduate students wishing to learn how and where mathematics and computations are used in the field of brain mapping. Students will also learn about the neuroanatomy of the brain. We will read mathematical and scientific papers related to brain mapping and learn about current topics of research. Students will get to use software related to image processing and brain mapping. This is an ideal seminar for graduate students in biomathematics wishing to learn about some of the open problems in brain mapping. |
Eligibility | This course is for graduate students in the Department of Mathematics. Graduate students from other departments and undergraduate students must have the permission of the instructor to enroll. |
Text Book
|
There is no specific text for the course. Students will read mathematics and scientific papers related to brain mapping. If reading is required, you are expected to come to class having read the material in advance. |
Grading | This class is graded S/U. Students are expected to read required material in advance of class and participate in class discussions. Students will be expected to give at least one presentation in class. A maximum of 3 absences will be allowed in order to receive a passing grade. |
Courtesy and Attendance | I expect you to get to class on time and not to leave class until I have dismissed it. If you must leave class early, please let me know before class begins. I expect you to attend class regularly. Studies show that students who attend class get higher grades than those who skip classes. A student absent from class bears the full responsibility for all subject matter and procedural information discussed in class. |
Class Participation |
I will encourage and expect you to participate in class. I will ask questions in class and encourage you to try to answer questions, or ask questions if you do not understand something. I will also encourage class discussion about certain topics. |
University Attendance Policy | Excused absences include documented illness, deaths in the family and other documented crises, call to active military duty or jury duty, religious holy days, and official University activities. These absences will be accommodated in a way that does not arbitrarily penalize students who have a valid excuse. Consideration will also be given to students whose dependent children experience serious illness. |
Academic Honor Policy | The Florida State University Academic Honor Policy outlines the University's expectations for the integrity of students' academic work, the procedures for resolving alleged violations of those expectations, and the rights and responsibilities of students and faculty members throughout the process. Students are responsible for reading the Academic Honor Policy and for living up to their pledge to ". . . be honest and truthful and . . . [to] strive for personal and institutional integrity at Florida State University." (Florida State University Academic Honor Policy, found at http://fda.fsu.edu/Academics/Academic-Honor-Policy.) |
Americans with Disabilities Act |
Students with disabilities needing academic accommodation should:
(1) register with and provide documentation to the Student Disability Resource Center; and (2) bring a letter to the instructor indicating the need for accommodation and what type. Please note that instructors are not allowed to provide classroom accommodation to a student until appropriate verification from the Student Disability Resource Center has been provided. This syllabus and other class materials are available in alternative format upon request. For more information about services available to FSU students with disabilities, contact the:
