Modeling Folding Patterns in the Human Brain

Deborah A. Smith and Monica K. Hurdal, Department of Mathematics, Florida State University

The human cerebral cortex is a highly folded surface. How these folds occur, and their significance, has fascinated scientists across a variety of disciplines. My research aims to answer some of these questions by using a Turing reaction diffusion system on a prolate spheroidal domain and see how domain size and shape play a key role in cortical patterning.
