Speaking on: "Pattern formation in systems outside of equilibrium"


Abstract:

        When an extended system is displaced outside of thermodynamic
equilibrium, it responds by forming complex spatio-temporal patterns.
The temporal evolution of such patterns is of theoretical interest as a
generic example of strong nonlinearity. From a practical standpoint,
the study is relevant for many processing methods in order to determine the
important length and time scales of the system. Selected examples of
pattern forming systems will be visualized, and their prominent features
discussed.
