Overview on Applied and Computational Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics at FSU offers both Master of Science degree and Ph. D.  degree in mathematics with specialization in applied and computational mathematics (ACM). Applied and computational mathematics faculty maintains a strong and vigorous research program in 

• computational aeroacoustics, 
• computational rheology of complex fluids, 
• computer visualization, 
• flow control,  
• fluid dynamics,  
• galactic dynamics,  
• high performance computing, 
• large scale computing and simulation, 
• mathematical modeling, 
• materials research, 
• multiphase flows, 
• nanomaterials and nanotechnology, 
• numerical analysis,  
• optimal control and optimization.   

Many faculty members are engaged in multidisciplinary research and are also  affiliated with  the School of Computational Science, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Institute, Program in Mathematics and Molecular Biology, College of Engineering, and the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.

• ACM currently has 14 faculty members and 33 graduate students. 75% of ACM faculty members are funded by external/federal grants.
• Most graduate students  in ACM (96% of 33) are supported through research assistantship (RA) and teaching assistantship (TA). Overwhelming number of RAs in the department is supported by ACM faculty.

The research of the faculty and students is supported by the state-of-the-arts high performance computing facility at the School of Computational Science, which includes SP3 and SP4 super-computers.
