The Arithmetic and Geometry of Salem numbers

It is a long standing open problem to decide whether the Salem numbers are bounded away from one, and if so whether the minimum is realized by a root of Lehmer's famous 10th degree polynomial. This paper gives a survey of recent results concerning the relation between the minimization problem for Salem numbers and problems in arithmetic and geometry.
